What are wick tins and what are they for?

Wick feet are small but extremely important components used in handmade candle making. Their main function is to keep the wick in a stable, central position at the bottom of the vessel or mould. Thanks to their use, the wick does not move during the pouring of the wax and burns evenly, which translates into aesthetics and safety of the finished candle.

These small metal components avoid crooked burning of the candle, problems with the flame going out or a tilted wick sunk in the wax. In practice, they are one of the most important components in the entire process - unnoticeable in the finished product, but essential for the candle to function properly.

Why use wick feet

The use of tinsel makes it much easier to install the wick and affects the burning quality of the candle. Well-matched foot:

  • keeps the wick at the correct depth and position,

  • ensures stability when pouring hot wax,

  • prevents the wick from moving during cooling,

  • promotes even and long candle burning.

Tinsel is also a practical solution for those who want to create candles in series or in larger quantities - it makes the production process more repeatable and predictable.

Tin types available - selection to suit wick type

There are two main types of tinsel available in the Lilly's Stories shop, designed with different types of wick in mind:

Tinsel for wooden wicks

Designed to work with wood wicks - wider and stiffer. They have the right indentations and diameters to match the characteristics of the wooden wicks, thus ensuring that they are firmly embedded in the wax.

Cotton wick tinsels

Smaller and more flexible, ideal for thin cotton wicks. By using them, you can position the wick precisely in the centre of the candle and achieve an elegant finish. They are available in various sizes and are suitable for candles in glass, jars, silicone or metal moulds.

All footers are lightweight, robust and proven in practice many times over.

How to use wick tinsel correctly

  1. Choose the right plate - adapted to the diameter and type of wick.

  2. Fix the wick in the footer - for cotton wicks, thread the wick through the hole and secure the end (e.g. by crimping the end with pliers).

  3. Glue the tin to the bottom of the container - preferably with a double-sided mounting sticker, which ensures stability when pouring the candle.

  4. Centre the wick - use a guide or clip to keep the wick vertical.

  5. Pour the wax over the candle - making sure that the wick does not change position as it cools.

This is a quick and effective way to achieve an even, professional-looking candle.
